A Letter from O Street International on Veterans Day
As a startup nonprofit organization, O Street International supports and we stand side-by-side with the men and women who serve our country. We proudly honor our distinguished veterans and remember those who have died in service to our country.
Our veterans represent the rich tapestry of our nation and we look forward to developing programs that not only highlight their sacrifices to freedom across the globe, but also securing opportunities for them and their families after they return home from service. As you may know, O Street International will be conducting Sports and Cultural Diplomacy programs in the United Arab Emirates next week and we will also be donating our time and treasure to support local organizations that provide military friendly benefits for those who serve our country.
Whether you have served in our nation’s armed forces or you have supported a family member or friend while they have served, I am honored to extend a heartfelt appreciation for your patriotism and willingness to serve our nation. At O Street International, these values provide – discipline, commitment, integrity, responsibility, respect, and teamwork – which are critical to the work that we do every day.
I wish you a blessed day of remembrance and a safe Veterans Day holiday.
Regards,
Marquex Faulkner
Executive Director, O Street International
Somewhere in the world—right now— there are two people. Two different hemispheres. Two diverse cultures. Two distinct ethnic, economic and educational backgrounds. From the outside looking in, these two people are very different.
Yet, they share one commonality. And that makes us more alike than different.
To affirm our similarities and celebrate our differences, we must connect and converse—person to person, hand to hand and eye to eye.
At O Street International, we seek to cultivate those connections and conversations, to provide opportunities to share thoughts, ideas, customs, best practices and experiences. We believe that when sharing occurs—across countries and cultures—we become richer, better, brighter.
Not as adversaries, but as ambassadors.
Not as stereotypes, but as real people.
Not as individuals, but as a community.
Outreach and Opportunities Overcoming Boundaries
Taking the opportunity to share, listen, and get to know neighbors. These Balkan students had the opportunity to meet Youth from the region. Many of these young people were babies or not even born, when their region was embroiled in the break up of Yugoslavia, the Bosnian and Croatia Wars. Many were children when Montenegro and Serbia became independent countries. Yet they all gathered around to learn, talk, and make new friends, all through the power of Sports and cultural diplomacy. Co-founder and Board President, Omari Faulkner, participated as a coach and instructor during this program, hosted by Georgetown University in collaboration with Sports United.
Youth are the leaders of tomorrow. Sports teach life skills including leadership, teamwork, and dedication. The enthusiasm of these young people is inspiring. These students spent an afternoon at US Consulate Mumbai India in 2010 listening, learning, and participating. All the while, learning about how the sports skills they have developed, and the persistence and determination they contribute to sports serves them lifelong. O Street International uses sports diplomacy programming as a vehicle to bridging relationships and encouraging young people from all backgrounds to learn more about each other and themselves through a common language- sports.
